The Austin850, the motif of Redstone, was a project made by the BMC (The British Motor Corporation), a merger of two automakers in 1952. It was developed to create a safe, fuel efficient car that could compete with German vehicles.
The requisite elements for the vehicle were being fuel efficient, inexpensive, safe, and capable of transporting four passengers, including luggage. It also used an 848cc engine.
This vehicle led to the birth of the Mini Cooper, which would eventually reign as the world's best microcar. This is what influenced the design of Redstone.
